Screw Geometry :

 

Screw geometry can vary greatly. Commonly used in extrusion are 3-zone screws and barrier screws.

3-zone screws have three sections: the feeding section, compression section, and metering section.

a.In the feeding section, unmelted polymer enters the barrel. The rotating screw transports the material through the heated barrel where melting begins.

b.In the compression section, gases such as air and volatiles like moisture are removed. Here, the depth of the screw channel decreases, pushing gases back towards the hopper.

c.In the metering section, pressure builds up, allowing the material to be shaped through dies such as film or block dies.

d.The compression ratio of the screw is determined by comparing the depth of the channels in the feeding section to those in the metering section.

e. Most screws feature a helix angle that matches the screw diameter.
